The 25th presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, The Rt. Rev. Frank Griswold III, passed away on March 5 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
When Griswold, then 85, was chosen to replace Presiding Bishop Edmund Browning at the 72nd General Convention in Philadelphia in July 1997, he was the bishop of the Diocese of Chicago. On January 10, 1998, he was installed in his position at Washington National Cathedral, and he formally assumed his position. He held office until November 1, 2006, when the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori took over.
Please join me in praying for the family of Bishop Griswold and for all of us who are grateful for a remarkable and obedient worker of God who served among us as the 25th presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church.

After the 1994 gathering of convention reduced the term from 12 years to nine years, Griswold became the first presiding bishop of the church to hold office for a shorter period of time.
Griswold, who is well known for his ecumenical and interreligious work, assisted in guiding the relationship between The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America as they entered into complete communion. An agreement made at the 1997 General Convention, when Griswold was chosen, gave rise to the relationship.
