Mariska Hargitay was born on January 23, 1964 in Santa Monica, California. She studied at the UCLA School of Theater Film and Television but did not finish her degree when she started a career in acting.
She made her film debut with Ghoulies. She has since starred in other movies including Welcome to 18, Jocks, Hard Time Romance, The Perfect Weapon, Bank Robber, Leaving Las Vegas, Lake Placid, and Perfume, among others.
On television, she made guest appearances in such television shows as Baywatch, Wiseguy, Grapevine, Hotel Room, and many others. She then became known for her role as Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
