The district of Northwest ISD in Texas announced on Friday that Superintendent David Hicks had passed away due to a medical issue.
Aside from the district’s notification on Friday night, not much else is known at this time regarding the circumstances surrounding Hicks’ death.
The district said in a statement, “Dr. Hicks had an immediate impact on the employees and kids of Northwest ISD and we will miss him greatly.”
Hicks had only been the superintendent of Northwest ISD for a short time before his untimely death; he had been hired for the position in March, after receiving approval from the school board.
According to his bio on Northwest ISD’s website, Hicks has been working as an educator for more than 30 years.
He began his career in education as a classroom teacher and worked his way up through campus leadership and district administration.
Hicks served as superintendent of Sherman ISD for six years prior to his current position at Northwest ISD, during which time the district’s fund balance was increased and new educational initiatives like advanced placement and dual credit were implemented.
Under Hicks’ leadership, Sherman ISD received numerous awards and recognitions, including a Pre-K Center of Excellence designation from the Texas Education Agency. Under HIcks’ administration, Sherman High School had the highest graduation percentage in the region.
When Hicks initially became superintendent of Northwest ISD, he declared, “Children are the focus of everything we do as educators.” Every day, our schools hold the power to transform lives and communities, and I can’t wait to put the students of Northwest Independent School District (ISD) first in everything I do.
Hicks formerly worked as the area superintendent of secondary programs for Denton ISD, where he managed the development of secondary schools and supervised middle and high school students.

Hicks began his teaching career in Carrolton-Farmers Branch ISD as a middle school history teacher before moving into a campus leadership position. After that, he led schools in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District and the Carrolton-Farmers Branch Independent School District.
Hicks completed his doctoral studies in educational leadership at the University of North Texas, where he also earned his master’s degree in educational administration.

The Denton Independent School District is one of the fastest expanding school districts in North Texas, and Dr. Hicks comes to Sherman from there as the superintendent of secondary academic programs.
His teaching career spans 28 years.
During that period, he worked as a middle school history teacher, an assistant principle at a high school, an elementary school opening coordinator, a principal at both the middle school and high school levels, and finally as an assistant superintendent.
David has made it one of his life’s missions to promote the value of a public education.
Having graduated from a Dallas public school, he had nothing but praise for his educators.
His parents did not complete college, but they made sure he and his five siblings did.
After graduating high school, four of the six children became educators.
His pharmacist wife has been by his side for the past 28 years. They’re parents to two adorable little ones. Their son is a Tyson employee and he and his wife make their home in Arkansas. The daughter is pursuing a degree in medicine at Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Hicks said he attempts to live by the following quote:
“Despite my best efforts, I can’t conquer the world alone. Responsibility, rather than weakness, is what I get from this situation.” He went on to say that it is quite similar to the motto of the Rotary Club: “Service Above Self.”
David reflected on his efforts to make a difference every day, no matter how big or small. His stated objective was to “help this community and make a difference for students by supporting our teachers in the classroom,” which he explained was both a personal and professional priority.
The results of a Gallup strength test might shed light on an individual’s best areas of application. As opposed to focusing on what people “can’t” achieve, this approach highlights their abilities instead. Putting the correct personnel in charge of a classroom allows for a greater focus on the students’ talents and a greater opportunity to build on those areas of potential.
Gallup says that Dr. Hicks is a high achiever. So, David says he wants the best for himself, his coworkers and clients, our kids, and the community as a whole.
Even though it seems impossible, Dr. Hicks says he will continue. He just will not accept the word “no” as an option. If it’s the right thing to do, he’ll put in every ounce of effort he has to figure out how to make it happen. It might look like he’s being deliberately unyielding, but he swears that’s not the case. He simply desires optimal success for our team and our children.
Dr. Hicks’ optimistic outlook is another one of his many assets. Even when there is an initial argument or they don’t see eye to eye, he always looks for the good in the other person. David looks for an upbeat spin he can put on things.
David has faith in the years to come. identical to Rotarians and all those who participate in Rotary. Making a positive impact locally and globally is something we are all actively working toward.
David’s ability to draw people in is another one of his many strengths. He joked that it’s something that gets him in trouble both at home on the weekend and at work. Dr. Hicks said he values the opinions of others and seeks them out before making important choices.
The great history and prestige of Sherman was a major factor in Dr. Hicks’ decision to locate there. During his first trip to Sherman, he met with locals to get their feedback on the city and its educational system. The community’s support for Sherman and the school system moved him profoundly.
The foundation of the Sherman educational system is a dedication to and pursuit of excellence in education. They put an emphasis on academic success and getting pupils ready for further education.
