William (Bill) A. Gage, who had lived in Hopewell Junction, New York, for the majority of his 74 years, was called home to be with the Lord on the 22nd day of the month of July, 2019.

Bill came into this world at the Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 27, 1944. At that time, he was given the name William. Judith Shea Gage and Herbert James Gage welcomed their first child together with the birth of their son.

James was actually his middle name. Bill grew up in Jersey City up until he was about 5 years old, spending the majority of his childhood there. After that, he moved to the town of Fairlawn, which is located in the state of New Jersey.

For his primary education, he received it at St. Anne’s Elementary School, which is located in Fairlawn. It was at St. Joseph’s, a Franciscan Seminary in Callicoon, New York, that he got his start in the secondary education system.

This was the beginning of his high school career as a freshman. Bill completed his final year of high school at St. Bonaventure’s High School in Paterson, New Jersey, and received his diploma from there in 1963. After being awarded his diploma, he did not spend any time before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps to serve his country.

During the Vietnam War, he volunteered in the military because he felt it was his duty to serve his country and he believed that doing so would fulfill his moral mission.

He joined the military in 1963 and continued his service until 1966, during which time he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. When he got married on November 20, 1965, at St. Nicholas Church in Passaic, New Jersey, his bride was Maureen Lynch. The ceremony took place in New Jersey. They established their home in Camp Lejuene, which is in the state of North Carolina, and it was there that Bill completed his service obligation. Upon moving back to the state of New Jersey, they settled down in the community of Maywood, which is located within the state. Bill and his family uprooted their lives and moved to Beacon, New York, in 1969 so that Bill could take advantage of a new employment opportunity. After moving to New York in 1971 with his family, Bill eventually made his home in Hopewell Junction, and he continued to call that community his home right up to the time of his death.

Bill’s career took him in a diverse range of paths during the course of his life. From 1968 through 1977, Bill was employed in the automotive industry. During that time, he worked at a number of different sites, including Ford Motor Credit in Elmsford, New York, and McCormack Ford in Beacon, New York, among other places. In 1977, he decided to leave the business. After accepting a position there in 1977, Bill began his employment at Shop Rite as a cashier. Bill began his professional life working as a stock guy and eventually worked his way up to the position of General Store Manager at the location in Wappingers Falls, New York, where he stayed employed for a number of years. During this time, he was also employed there.

In 1993, he made the decision to retire after working for ShopRite for the previous 16 years. Shortly thereafter, he obtained a position with a Russian company that was in the process of establishing a supermarket in St. Petersburg, Russia, that was fashioned after supermarkets in the United States. After the grand opening of the shop was successfully concluded, he went home to begin a new phase in his life.

He began by going back to his residence. He started conducting volunteer work at the St. Christopher’s Inn in Graymoor, which is located in the town of Garrison, in the state of New York. Bill was granted the opportunity to participate in an internship, which he later utilized to fulfill the requirements for obtaining his accreditation as a counselor for substance abuse.

In 2009, Bill stepped down from his role as Clinical Supervisor at St. Christopher’s Inn and began enjoying his retirement.

Bill has pursued and been successful in a wide variety of professional vocations despite not having benefited from a college education in any of them.
